Freddy did it. Jason did it. Michael did it. Even Leatherface did it, multiple times! Now, it looks like Chucky’s the next horror movie icon in line for a modern makeover, with Collider reporting that there’s a Child’s Play reboot in the works.
Before the righteous indignation begins to boil over at the prospect of yet another of said reboots, feast your eyes on the impressive coterie of cinematic talent MGM have tapped for the mooted remake.
Following the surprise box office success of last year’s It, producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith are on board to (hopefully) work their magic once again. They’re joined by director Lars Klevberg, who’s behind the soon-to-be-released horror Polaroid, and scriptwriter Tyler Burton Smith (Kung-Fury 2).
With that impressive ensemble it’s not entirely clear if the Child’s Play remake will be playing its scares straight, or aiming for the same sort of transgressive humour that marked the six (!!) Chucky sequels. The last Child’s Play sequel was 2017’s Cult of Chucky.
What’s also unclear is if fan favourite Brad Dourif will be reprising his role as the iconic killer doll. According to rumours, the film will focus on an It/Stranger Things-style group of pre-teen kids as they’re menaced by the a hi-tech version of the Good Guy Doll.
Franchise creator Don Mancini had already talked about another Child’s Play sequel, tentatively titled Chucky on the Orient Express. He had also expressed an interest in a crossover with the Nightmare on Elm Street series, with the working title Freddy vs. Chucky: Child’s Play on Elm Street.
In February of this year, a Child’s Play TV show was announced as being in development, with Mancini producing and Dourif reprising his role as Chucky.
Production on the Child’s Play remake is due to start September 2018.
