Jared Leto’s Joker will get his own movie, following in the footsteps of fellow Suicide Squad-er Harley Quinn. Back in May, Margot Robbie teased that the film could be an R-rated girl gang film and not necessarily a standalone Harley Quinn movie, because “Harley loves interacting with people [so] she’s got to be with other people”.
The Harley Quinn film has been in the works for 3 years now and it was recently announced that Dead Pigs director Cathy Yan would direct the project.
With regards to the standalone Joker movie, Leto will star and executive produce the feature, which will be “paving the way” for more Suicide Squad spin-offs. Suicide Squad was pretty much unloved after its release in 2016, but arguably, Jared Leto’s Joker was one of the strongest and most entertaining elements of the film.
In a film that was exceedingly dull and joyless, the Joker and Harley Quinn stood out as fun and interesting characters with attitude. One of Suicide Squad’s mistakes was featuring far too little of the Joker, so it should come as no surprise to see DC choosing to focus solely on his character, hoping to breathe fresh life and potential in a probably planned Suicide Squad cinematic universe. We don’t have enough of them, do we?
With interest in DC wavering after the disappointing Batman vs Superman and Justice League, plus the studio being eclipsed by Marvel’s domination of the superhero universe, Warner Bros is going to have to do something special if it is to convince audiences it is still a serious player in the comic book adaptation world.
One film we know we’re very much looking forward to is the sequel to Wonder Woman, DC’s franchise diamond among stones. We can expect that to swoop in in November 2019.
