ROB DA BANK RESCORES KING KONG

Friday 7th October @ BFI Southbank / Film Starts at 8:45pm

£10 from www.bfi.org.uk

PrettyFresh and BFI Southbank are pleased to announce an exclusive new event: Sonic Cinema.  Every month an exciting evening of explorations in music and moving image will present feature films, documentaries and live performances that marry the two art forms together in diverse and innovative ways. The curators Tayo Popoola, renowned music producer and DJ, and Stuart Brown, Head of Events at BFI Southbank, will investigate and experiment with the music in films they love or simply indulge in films that explore the world of music. Whatever the main feature, the night will always end with an “After-Show” party in the benugo bar & kitchen.

The first Sonic Cinema kicks off on Friday 7th October when festival impresario and Radio 1 late-night legend Rob da Bank will be taking the controls for a live re-scoring of Ernest B Shoedsack’s silent classic, King Kong. Altering the pace and mood the movie has been re-imagined with music from musicians including Sigur Ros, Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Lee Scratch Perry, Black Sabbath, Portishead, Harry Connick Junior, Bon Iver and Laurie Anderson, amongst others:

Commenting on the performance Rob enthused:
‘I’ve performed my alternative soundtrack to King Kong once for BBC3 and once live in front of an audience…I cant wait to try it again as it’s totally live and quite scary… a bit like the film. I actually chose the 1933 original of King Kong as it’s one of the few films the BBC owns so no one had a problem with me fooling about with the soundtrack. I’m a music man through and through, and love film too, but never expected that I’d be doing something like this at BFI Southbank. I’m already feeling the pressure but in my head that’s a good thing… hope to see you down there’.

Rob will play live in NFT1 as the film plays out. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Rob conducted by co-curator Tayo Popoola who will talk through some of Rob’s musical choices and inspirations. The two of them will then de-camp to the Benugo bar for the after party, dancing and discussion.

Next in the Sonic Cinema series on Friday 4th November, PrettyFresh and BFI Southbank will host the screening of cult British Indie film ‘Anyone Can Play Guitar’ with host Adam Buxton and appearances from Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien and Colin Greenwood – more details on this and other Sonic Cinema events coming soon.

Robin Yacoubian

Robin Yacoubian has been the Editor of Flickfeast for more years than he cares to remember. He has always had an appetite for film that borders on unhealthy and outwardly extols the merits or World and Indie cinema, whilst secretly loving nothing better than a good blockbuster If asked what his favourite film was he would always reply "Not the Shawshank Redemption". Not that it is a bad film… far from it... just not his favourite.
