The world premiere of Stan & Ollie, starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly, will close this year’s BFI London Film Festival on October 21.

Directed by Filth director Jon S. Baird, Stan & Ollie tells the story of legendary comedy duo Laurel and Hardy’s triumphant farewell tour in the UK and Ireland, accompanied by their wives Lucille (Shirley Henderson) and Ida (Nina Arianda). Despite the pressures of a hectic schedule, the pair’s love of performing, as well as for each other, endures as they secure their place in the hearts of their fans.

Written by BAFTA-winner Jeff Pope, Stan & Ollie will be released in the UK and Ireland on January 11 2019.

In addition to the premiere, there will also be simultaneous preview screenings taking place across the UK.

BFI London Film Festival artistic director Tricia Tuttle said: “These two prove that true comic timing is eternal, and it’s a perfect end to the festival as the BFI looks ahead to our major UK-wide Comedy Genius season this autumn, as well as a month-long Laurel & Hardy season at BFI Southbank in January.”

The news follows the recent announcement of this year’s opening film, which is the international premiere of Steve McQueen’s thriller Widows, starring Viola Davis and Michelle Rodriguez.

The BFI London Film Festival will be taking place between 10 and 21 October. The full programme will be announced on August 30.
