Star Wars: Episode IX Will See Billy Dee Williams Return As Lando
Donald Glover made a credible effort at channelling him in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but you just can’t beat the real thing. Therefore it’s with a big grin that I can tell you it’s been confirmed Billy Dee Williams will be reprising his part as Lando Calrissian for the forthcoming Star Wars: Episode IX.
One of the few iconic actors from the originals yet to appear in this new trilogy of Star Wars films, The Hollywood Reporter tells us that that Williams will indeed be returning to the franchise for the first time since 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
Rumours about his appearance in the new film were already circling. Said rumours only grew more intense when Williams cancelled a slew of convention appearances this summer.
Throwing Lando into the mix makes sense, on both a narrative and a practical level. Following the tragic loss of Carrie Fisher, there are less and less familiar faces for Lucasfilm and Disney to draw on.
Then there’s the fact that, in-universe, both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker have gone off to become part of The Force.
Add in the fact that Lando’s ex-best friend Han was killed by his own son (erm, spoilers for The Force Awakens?) and you’ve got the potential for some interesting inter-generational drama between Billy Dee Williams as Calrissian and Adam Driver as Kylo Ren.
Star Wars: Episode IX has had something of a troubled journey thus far, with original director Colin Trevorrow being booted alongside co-screenwriter Derek Connolly. The reins were then handed back to The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams, collaborating with Argo‘s Chris Terrio on the script.
Star Wars: Episode IX is due to hit cinemas on December 20 2019.
