An action movie featuring a strong and sexy woman and lots of ridiculous stuntwork? The fact that Luc Besson’s name is attached to this film should surprise you about as much as the fact that night follows day. Olivier Megaton, last seen helming the third Transporter movie, directs and Zoe Saldana stars but this is definitely a Besson movie from start to finish.
Young Cataleya witnesses the murder of her parents after her father tries to walk away from his former criminal employers. Cataleya doesn’t survive because of any moment of weakness on the part of the bad guys, she runs for her life and doesn’t settle down again until she gets to America and finds an address that she was given by her father.
Years later, Cataleya (now played by the beautiful Zoe Saldana) is an effective assassin with only one failing: she cannot help leaving messages for those who wanted her dead all those years ago. She wants revenge and nobody will get in her way.
Yes, feel free to move along and move past this film if you fancy seeing something original and fresh. In that respect, there’s nothing to see here.
The screenplay, co-written by Besson with Robert Mark Kamen, is weak and lazy throughout. The baddies are uncomplicated and as bad as baddies can be while Zoe Saldana is saddled with the standard “assassin living a life of solitude despite developing feelings for others” that’s been used in almost every previous movie of this type.
Direction from Megaton shows the director still failing to live up to his surname but there are one or two decent set-pieces throughout and the scenes set in Colombia itself really benefit from the environment and local atmosphere. Sadly, that doesn’t help with the pacing or the many other moments that underwhelm those seeking an action fix.
Saldana is great in the lead role, strong and sexy, which should come as no surprise to those (like myself) who have been fans of her work for some time now. Jordi Molla is good value as the main baddie trying to clean up a mess quickly getting out of hand. Lennie James is the cop who works hard to get the upper hand on Cataleya before realising that’s never going to happen. And Michael Vartan is the guy that Cataleya takes a shine to.
It’s enjoyable enough but there are many better action movies out there.
