The sign of a truly great actress is one who has the ability to make you forget them and believe that they are the person they’re portraying. Dame Judi Dench achieves this every time she appears on screen, and no more so than when she is playing a queen as she has several times to great acclaim.
She pulls it off again in director Stephen Frears new film Victoria & Abdul, which hits cinemas this autumn. Following the true story of Queen Victoria’s (Dench) friendship with an Indian clerk called Abdul (played by Ali Fazal), the film looks rich and sumptuous down to the smallest detail. Could the great dame win the Oscar she was denied last time she played Britain’s greatest monarch in Mrs Brown? We shall see.
