You could fill this news column everyday at the moment with the latest statistical facts of what is proving to be one of the biggest movies of – well ever. But that isn’t going to happen. This will be the first, and last (for the moment anyway), mention here of the phenomena that is Fifty Shades of Grey. According to figures just released on the statistical website ‘Box Office Mojo’ the romantic (read ‘erotic’) drama based on the bestselling novel by author E. L. James, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and starring Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson and Jennifer Ehle, has taken more since it opened last Friday than some studios make in a whole year of production. The film broke records around the world for the biggest opening weekend ever raking in an eye watering $158 million from 58 markets, including the most ever in the U.K. for a movie from Universal Pictures at $21.1 million, as well as the biggest single day for Universal Pictures International at $55.1 million on Valentine’s Day. If it keeps this momentum up it will be well on its way to breaking the international record for the biggest R rated film ever, which is currently held by The Matrix Reloaded at $461 million. And who said sex didn’t pay.
