“It’s a whodunnit; you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all” remarks one of the film’s lead characters mere minutes into See How They Run, the latest in a slew of murder mysteries hitting our screens this year. But let me assure you, you’ve not seen See How They Run before. See How They Run is the crowd-pleasing film of the year that’s laugh out loud funny and will leave you itching for more.

Set in London’s West End in the year 1953, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap is celebrating its 100th performance, with plans being arranged to turn the show into a film, when a murder brings this all to a halt.

In comes Saoirse Ronan’s Constable Stalker and Sam Rockwell’s Inspector Stoppard to solve the case. The stage is set, and our suspects are all rounded up. Reece Shearsmith, David Oyelowo, Harris Dickinson, Ruth Wilson, Adrien Brody and Charlie Cooper are amongst the supporting players and it’s the cast that help make this film so fun.

The entire ensemble are all magnificent but Ronan and Rockwell are the dynamic duo. Their chemistry sets the whole film alight with Saoirse Ronan delivering witty pun after pun all through the film. See How They Run keeps you laughing the whole way through, leaving you with a huge grin on your face until the very end.

See How The Run (2022) - Film Review

It’s the funniest film of the year but it also sticks the landing on the murder mystery side of things. With a killer twist that even Agatha Christie would be proud of, See How They Run has you guessing right up until the very end.

Director Tom George plays with the tried and tested tropes and conventions of the whodunnit film. And he uses them all to his advantage, making fun of the film’s structure leaving you being able to see everything coming, whilst simultaneously seeing nothing until it slaps you in the face making you feel stupid for never noticing it earlier.

Its stylish production design and clever use of split screens make for a killer time at the movies. See How They Run is the sort of movie cinemas were made for. To sit back, relax and just enjoy as the film sweeps you away being in a room full of strangers, all laughing their heads off together and having an absolute blast.

See How The Run (2022) - Film Review

Every single element comes together from the whip-smart writing to the wonderful acting and striking visuals creating a film that you never want to end. See How They Run’s 98 minutes fly by in a flurry of fun and murder that’s impossible to resist. It’s one of those films that you just want to watch over and over again. I just hope we get to spend more time with Saoirse Ronan’s Stalker in an endless supply of sequels.

See How They Run is a murderously good time that’s one of the best films of the year. You’ll struggle to find a better whodunnit.

See How They Run is in cinemas September 9th.
