Only the second ever animated film to be nominated for an Academy Best Picture Award, Beauty and the Beast (1991) was the other. However some may argue that fellow 2010 best picture contendor Avatar, is also an animation!
Up is a typically charming offering from Pixar. Fantastic animation as you would expect, but with the film touching heavily on the issues of old age and bereavement, it is their most grown up to date.
The montage at the start of the film really has beauty and sadness in equal measure, and we feel that it might be a bit too much for the little ones to handle. After that it moves onto safer grounds, with a nice tale which sees 78 year old Carl Fredricksen setting off, house et al (including the kitchen sink) to fulfill his lifelong dream of seeing South America. Along for the journey is stowaway Russell, an 8 year old ever eger wilderness explorer. Much spirit of adventure is to be had, but I won’t give away too much here… But the dogs were a highlight for me!
Could this be the first ever animation to scoop the best pitcure award? Probably not but it is worthy of the nomination. Instead that title may go to Avatar 😉
Or will the hurt locker repeat its baftas success and scoop the award?
