Christian Loubek’s Belief is a testament to that unwavering power. Both in oneself and that reinforcement from others.
Alongside his wife and daughter, Lennox joyously unpacks their new home but is left speechless when he finds a letter in a moving box labelled ‘mom’ that predestines a different life for him – it’s not as he remembers.
This short film succinctly portrays the strength and power of a mother’s love. Erika Hamilton delivers a powerful performance as Lennox’s mother. Giving and sacrificing everything so that her dreams for her son may become a reality.
The central memories that are unlocked by the letter, tell the full story of Lennox’s education. While essentially a montage, it manages to rise above the cliche thanks to the editing, cinematography and performances.
If anything, the door metaphor is slightly overplayed. Lennox’s bedroom door is taken off the hinges and turned into a study desk in the house. A visual representation that no door will be closed and stand in the way of him achieving his full potential.
Belief delivers its heartfelt message with aplomb. Maximising its emotional impact within the short runtime. As Marty McFly in Back To The Future would say, “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything”. Loubek has put his mind to it and accomplished a well crafted, moving short piece of cinema.
